Experience Description
Relive the Edo period with a guided 6-7km walk along the historic Nakasendō, tracing the moderate yet scenic Torii Pass from Yabuhara Station to Narai-juku, known as 'Narai of a Thousand Inns.' Begin your journey by exploring Yabuhara's local history and crafts before ascending the pass, featuring traditional cobblestone paths (ishidatami), breathtaking valley views, and an ancient mountaintop shrine. The descent leads into Narai-juku, a post town where the streetscape feels like stepping back in time. The tour also includes a visit to Kiso-Hirasawa, adjacent to Narai-juku and designated an Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District, renowned as the only lacquerware production center on the Nakasendō. With your local guide, you'll visit the workshops of skilled lacquer artisans to admire their craftsmanship. An optional lacquerware experience in Kiso Hirasawa can be arranged upon request for an additional fee.
