An exclusive lacquer chopsticks workshop for Bed and Craft guests. You will be taught directly by Japanese lacquer artist Sanae Tanaka, who has studied under Yukifumi Yokoyama since 1997, established TOMORU STUDIO in 2008 with her wood carver husband, and exhibited her works in Hong Kong.
This program uses real urushi (Japanese lacquer). The experience begins with a friendly chat with the artisan, followed by mixing lacquer and pigment (which influences the final quality), designing with masking tape, applying the lacquer, and drying the chopsticks in an *urushiburo* (drying chamber).
10:00 Gather at the studio. Begin the morning with a friendly chat with the master artisan and other lacquer artists.
10:15 Mix lacquer and pigment and let it thicken. This process influences the quality of the final product.
11:30 Take a break with a cup of tea; get ready for the second half.
11:50 Mask the wood part of the chopsticks and design the lacquered section.
12:00 Apply lacquer to the chopsticks and dry in the urushiburo “bathtub.”
12:30 Workshop finished.
