Experience Description
This immersive experience delves into the ancient art of wisteria weaving, Japan's oldest textile originating thousands of years ago in the Jomon period. Participants will learn about the labor-intensive, multi-step creation process, from harvesting and preparing wisteria vines (peeling, boiling in lye, rinsing, drying) to the intricate process of making thread by twisting fibers and then spinning it. The final steps involve setting up the loom and weaving the threads into fabric. The workshop highlights the historical significance of wisteria weaving, its rediscovery in 1962, and the dedicated efforts of the Tango Wisteria Weaving Preservation Society to keep this heritage alive. It’s a journey into a sustainable and beautiful art form that reflects the weaver's personality.
