Experience Description
Delve into the rich history of Japanese washi paper making, an art form drastically diminished but meticulously preserved. Learn how washi's preparatory process is intimately linked to nature and the seasons, resulting in incredibly durable paper said to last a thousand years. This experience highlights why Kyoto by the Sea is an ideal hub for this craft, with its abundant mulberry and oriental paper bush plants. Participants will learn about the labor-intensive mulberry preparation (without having to do it!) and watch experts at work, creating paper with seeming effortlessness. Afterward, try your hand at making your own washi paper with the guidance of an expert. The tour concludes with an opportunity to shop at the workshop galleries for professional washi paper, an excellent, light gift. The experience is hosted by Tango Washi, a prestigious, family-run business in the foothills of the Oeyama mountains, known for their exceptional quality washi, restoration work for Kyoto's Golden Temple, and mastery in crafting Japan's thinnest paper. Owner Tanaka-san passionately upholds this ancient legacy.
