Experience Description
Takaoka Lacquerware is distinctive for its beautiful mother-of-pearl inlay and ʻaogai nuriʼ, a technique in which thin shells are painted from the back to create elaborate designs. Learn about this incredible technique directly from Takeshi Musashigawa, the 4th generation head of Musashigawa Kobo, and see the familyʼs workshop, where he works with his father, mother, and wife continuing this 400-year-old artistic tradition. After learning about the lacquering process, make your own pair of chopsticks with mother-of-pearl design.
Inclusions
Take home your own original pair of chopsticks. This program is held in Japanese. A separate interpretation/guide fee will be charged (4 hours at 35,000 yen + 3,300 yen each hour thereafter).
