Arrive in Kakunodate from Tokyo, Hirosaki or Akita station. Drop off luggage at your accommodation, the Wanoi. Take lunch at a local restaurant and explore the area at your leisure.
Most of the attractions are within a 30-minute walk from the station, including the Edo-period samurai district and the equally enchanting merchants’ quarter. You can visit several of these faithfully preserved residences, with their beautifully maintained Japanese gardens.
This morning meet Su-chan and Fujiko, two gorgeous Akita dogs, who need to head out on their daily walk. You are invited to join them by Yoshimi-san, their English-speaking owner.
In the afternoon, visit a small family business which specialises in many objects using the bark from wild cherry trees, for which Kakunodate is famous across Japan. To better understand these local craft traditions, you get involved in a craft workshop, making a miniature cherry bark wall-hanging or an itaya-zaiku wickerwork horse, all under the guidance of the resident experts.
Today explore Lake Tazawa, just 25-minutes away by taxi. Meet your guide for a two-hour cycling tour, visiting several local markets and farms (including a honey farm), with opportunity to talk to the farmers. Collect ingredients for a tasty barbeque lunch cooked by your hosts back at the lakeshore.
After lunch your guests will then take a taxi to Nyuto Onsen to have the ultimate onsen experience at the Tsurunoyu Ryokan.
After sneaking in 2 more onsen before and after breakfast, check out of your ryokan and head to Tazawa
station to begin the next part of your Japan adventure.
